ARTIST STATEMENT
I originally made the letters as props for a painting series about monumentalization.
I used paper mache to make them look like stone and I personified them by having them
wear jeans. The more paintings and drawings I did of them, the more they turned into
messengers. When I started placing them in outdoor settings, the words became intertwined
with the environment. I would walk in the woods or on the beach until I felt a message
emerge from the landscape. The letters typically spell out instructions such as, “GO” and “DO.”
BIOGRAPHY
I was born in Bangor, Maine and I was raised to be an artist.
I received my BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts / Tufts University in 1999.
In 2006 I received an MFA from California State University, Long Beach.
My artwork has been exhibited in numerous cities such as Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, San Jose, and Kansas City. My work has been published and reviewed in several publications such as Art in America, New American Paintings, The Los Angeles Times, Artweek, The Kansas City Star, and ZYZZYVA.
My artwork is in public and private collections throughout the United States.
I have taught privately and at the university and secondary levels. As an Art Coach, I guide artists through an individualized process that focuses on building a strong relationship with their thought process, idea generation, and artistic practice. I currently live and work in West Chester, Pennsylvania.
